I have Hyperhidrosis(excessive sweating) and i'm gettin medication for it now but i was just wandering out of the millions of people tht use Yahoo Answers, how many of them have or know someone with Hyperhidrosis.
Does any1 else have Hyperhidrosis?
Me...also use a prescription. Runs in my family, but I'm the only one who ever saw a doctor about it. So embarrassing! The prescription does help!
Reply:Looks like your the only one.
Reply:I also have it. I use to get these big rings of sweat on my underarms, it was so embarassng
Reply:I've been involved in the treatment of those sufferers where medication did not work.
Surgical intervention (minimally invasive - local anaesthetic) should only ever be a last resort and "chemical sympathectomy" is considered in those patients who are fit and if the symptoms of hyperhydrosis is affecting the quality of life.
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area (which I think is the back/side of the neck - not completely sure). Then using x-rays for guidance the surgeon injects phenol onto the sympathetic nerve root which runs just in front of the spine, this has the effect of "disabling" that nerve and this reduces/ceases sweating.
I don't know the stats but the outcomes are not guaranteed, that is, it doesn't work for everyone but there are enough positive results to suggest that these procedures should continue to be made available on the NHS.
The procedure takes only 30-45 minutes, is usually done as an outpatient and requires 2-3 hours of monitoring within the dept prior to going home.
As with any invasive medical technique there are risks that the surgery could go wrong and so a thorough "needs versus benefits" assessment would be carried out.
Good Luck
